Speaker Details
IABC Pacific Plains Region is a non-profit organization that supports the leaders and members of the region’s IABC chapters with resources and professional development opportunities, and the IABC PPR Exchange Conference is instrumental in financially supporting these goals.
As with many non-profit conference events, all confirmed speakers are required to formally register and pay their registration if they plan to attend all or part of the conference, as there are significant costs associated with each attendee.
If you as a speaker are attending only your session to present and do not plan on participating in the conference, your registration fee is waived. However, we require that you still formally register. All speakers are responsible for travel, hotel, and other expenses related to participating in the event.

Julie Baron
Principal, Communication Works
Julie Baron has 19 years of communications experience. She is a resourceful communications strategist witdemonstrated ability to work internally within the organization, as well as externally within the community. Her functional expertise includes employee communications, public and media relations, marketing communications and events management.
Connie Eckard, ABC, Ph.D., Fellow
Connie is a writer, editor and mentor who has spent his professional career chronicling employee innovations in providing workplace solutions.He has served IABC since its inception. He has been an officer and headed committees at the chapter, district and international levels. He has received the IABC Chairman’s Award, among numerous others, and is a life member of IABC/Tulsa, IABC/Dallas and IABC U.S. District 5. His writing has appeared in many professional journals. Connie has been a communication leader, advisor and teacher in the public, government and education sectors. He was senior public affairs counsel in the U.S. Air Force Reserve and retired as a colonel. He was listed in the first edition of Who’s Who in the Media and Communications.
Renee Gastineau, ABC
Founder, Gastineau Communications Inc.
Renee has more than 15 years experience in the marketing, public relations and journalism industries. Her unique background includes experience as a small business owner, a marketing consultant and a journalist trained by National Public Radio. She founded Gastineau Communications Inc. in 1997, with clients ranging from those in the renewable energy field to professional sports teams. Renee holds an MBA from Seattle University and is an active volunteer.
Lesli Gee
Vice President, ROI Communication
Lesli works closely with senior executives to design, communicate and execute large-scale change initiatives, drawing on her experience in organizational development and internal corporate communication. She has led change communication efforts with clients such as HP, Cisco, Gap Inc. and Adobe. Prior to joining ROI Communication, Lesli was the director of Internal Communications and Organizational Development for Maxtor Corporation. Lesli holds an M.S. in Organization Development from the University of San Francisco.
John Gerstner, ABC
President, Communitelligence, Inc.
John holds career experience as a writer, photo-journalist, magazine editor, graphic designer, Internet/intranet strategist, video producer, radio announcer and book author. After a career in corporate communications with John Deere, he left in 2002 to focus on Web portals and communications consulting. John, who holds numerous communications awards, is a board member of Council of Communication Management and has served two terms on the Executive Board of the International Association of Business Communicators.
Marsha Gewirtzman
Director, Inclusion & Diversity, Cisco Services
Marsha and her team design, develop and execute Inclusion and Diversity programs and communication for nearly 10,000 employees. Marsha joined Cisco five years ago as the leader of Enterprise Field Marketing. Prior to that, she held a number of senior marketing and sales positions for companies including AT &T, Global Crossing and Tiffany & Co. Marsha was a dynamic force in the growth of Teleport Communications Group (TCG), a 5,000 person Competitive Local Exchange Company.
Todd Hattori, ABC
Business Manager, Washington Department Information Services' Technology Acquisition Services
Todd is responsible for the customer relations management program for the
information technology hardware, software, and consulting marketing and
sales. The opportunity to manage this multi-million dollar business - a
unique model in state government - resulted from his commitment to
aligning communication strategies with the "bottom line."
For the past 17 years, Todd has developed a broad range of communication
management skills by volunteering and working for a variety of
non-profit organizations, government agencies, and private corporations.
He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in argumentation and negotiation
from the University of Utah, and a Master of Arts degree in technical
writing from Westminster College
Todd is currently serving as the immediate past chair of the IABC International Executive Board.
Angela C. Jeffrey, APR
Vice President Editorial Research, VMS
After two decades in PR, advertising and marketing with JC Penney and major national agencies, Angie started Jeffrey Communications, which she sold to SDI, an international analytics firm, in 2002. As head of SDI’s PRtrak division, she worked toward the goal of standardizing PR measurement metrics and on correlating PR outputs with business outcomes. Angie now serves as VP Editorial Research for VMS, and serves as a member of the IPR Commission on PR Measurement & Evaluation.
Kit Jenkins, ABC
Associate Professor Webster University
Kit has recently returned from a 3.5-year assignment as Director of Webster University Thailand, an extended site of Webster University, St. Louis, MO. In that capacity, she was responsible for all academic issues, campus operations, institutional marketing and recruitment and governmental relations for the Asian campus. Jenkins came to academia from a career in communications with four years as Creative Supervisor for Maritz Performance Improvement Co. and seven years with AT&T as regional manager of internal communications. She has served the International Association of Business Communicators in multiple roles at the Chapter, District and International levels, culminating in her election as the Chair of the IABC Research Foundation.
Dr. Carol Kinsey Goman ~ GENERAL SESSION
President, Kinsey Consulting Services
Carol specializes in energizing individuals and organizations to thrive in an environment of constant change. An international lecturer, change-management specialist and executive coach, Carol’s clients include 95 organizations in 21 countries. She has served as adjunct faculty at John F. Kennedy University, the University of California, and the Chamber of Commerce of the United States’ Institutes for Organization Management. Prior to founding Kinsey Consulting Services, she was a therapist specializing in short-term therapy for behavioral change
David C. Kistle, ABC
Senior Vice President, Padilla Speer Beardsley
David is responsible for research and measurement at Padilla Speer Beardsley, a public relations firm. He was also 2004-5 chairman of IABC, as well as an adjunct faculty member at the University of Minnesota School of Journalism and Mass Communication and Webster University. He currently serves on the Institute for Public Relations Commission on PR Measurement and Evaluation. David holds a master’s degree in advertising and marketing communication from the University of Illinois.
Connie Kotke
Principal, Nautilus Communications LLC
Connie Kotke is a business-savvy professional dedicated to helping companies build strong brands from the inside out. Prior to founding Nautilus, Kotke spent more than 15 years leading strategic communication projects in enterprise branding and reputation management, employee engagement, public relations, investor relations and marketing. She is an adjunct instructor for graduate programs at Saint Mary’s University and serves as an enterpreneur consultant for Minnesota Small Business Development Centers.
Jim Link
Founder, Idea-Link
Jim is the founder of Idea-Link, a company which helps organizations generate, refine and market new ideas. Since 1994, Jim has worked with over 70 companies ranging from large companies like 3M, General Mills, and Marriott to mid-sized companies and start-ups. He also spent seven years as a marketing manager at General Mills. Jim, who holds an MBA in Marketing, is a frequent lecturer and adjunct professor at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Mary Ann McCauley, ABC
President and Principal, Catalyst Communications
Mary Ann provides strategic communication counsel to broad spectrum of businesses and nonprofits, working closely with senior management to develop and implement strategic corporate communication plans. Mary Ann has held several management positions for corporations including First Union Bancorpation, Hallmark Cards, Inc. and United Technologies Communications Company. She is active in IABC, and has, among other positions, served on the international executive board. She currently serves on the board of the IABC Pacific Plains Region.
David North
Manager, Business Solutions-Engineering, eBay
David joined eBay in 2004 as a Project Manager for the redesign of eBay’s SAP environment. During the past two years, David has partnered with the Internal Communications team on the delivery of a new intranet which includes many features to engage and connect employees as well as facilitate internal collaboration. Prior to eBay, David worked for David Powers & Associates and at HP, managing Unix Operating System software releases.
Valerie O’Neil ~ KEYNOTE
Vice President, Global Communications, Starbucks Coffee Company
Valerie is responsible for the development and execution of strategic global communications for Starbucks to ensure the company speaks with “one voice” to all audiences. Prior to joining Starbucks in June 2006, she was the Senior Director of Public Relations and Community Relations for the NBA’s Seattle Sonics and the WNBA’s Seattle Storm. She also spent seven years with Westin Hotels and Resorts managing public relations and marketing for properties in downtown Seattle and Palm Springs, California.
Catherine Roberts
Director, Internal Communications, eBay
A member of eBay’s Internal Communications team since 2003, Catherine champions new avenues for engaging and connecting employees using the intranet, video, blogging, webcasts and podcasting. During her career, Catherine has worked in internal communications, media relations, executive communications and television production for various organizations, including Sun Microsystems, Kaiser Permanente, and in public television. She is a graduate of U.C Berkeley.
Cindy Schmeig, ABC
President, Capira Marketing-Communications
Cindy helps clients define, document and deliver brands through strategic communication. She has 25 years experience in global, corporate, high-tech manufacturing communications. An IABC member since 1992, she has served as president of IABC Minnesota and currently serves on the IABC Pacific Plains Region (PPR) Board. Cindy holds a B.S. in Mass Communications along with a Masters of Business Communications.
Frank X. Shaw ~ KEYNOTE
President, Microsoft Accounts, Worldwide
Frank brings more than 20 years of professional public relations experience to Waggener Edstrom Worldwide, where he leads the Microsoft team and is responsible for global PR efforts. An avid follower of emerging media, Frank tracks its impact on corporate reputations, stock fluctuations, crisis situations and product launches. He has managed public relations for Knoll & Company Inc. and Gelman & Gray Communications, where he serviced accounts including McDonald’s Corp., Walt Disney Co., Willamette Industries Inc. and Paramount Pictures.
Joseph Ugalde

Joseph Ugalde has been vice president of marketing and communication for IABC since 2002, raising awareness of IABC and its programs throughout the world. He manages IABC's international branding campaign and is a past contributing editor of Communication World magazine.
Archana Verma

International Association of Business Communicators (IABC)
Archana manages public relations and marketing communications at IABC. She is responsible for media relations for the association and has secured coverage in the Wall Street Journal, BusinessWeek, USA Today and other publications. Most recently, Archana has been involved in leading IABC's presence in social media including LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter. She is also a contributing editor for IABC's award-winning magazine, Communication World.
Brad Whitworth, ABC
Senior Communication Manager, Cisco
Brad joined Cisco in 2007 and today is responsible for integrated communication for the part of the company that partners with IBM, Microsoft, HP, Nokia, Accenture and other multinational companies. Before Cisco, Brad led communication programs at HP, PeopleSoft and AAA. A former broadcaster, he holds an MBA from Santa Clara University. Brad was chairman of IABC in 1989-90 and was named a Fellow of the association in 1996. His communication work has earned six prestigious IABC Gold Quills.
